As I sit and write this, Forbes magazine talks about who they think the next trillionaire is going to be. I should probably stop visiting the Forbes website. But you know what they say. Know your enemy…
BUT it’s not just them. There are all kind of predictions going on. The Global Wealth Report from Credit Suisse reckons there will be 11 trillionaires within the next two decades1.
They have the nerve to say it’s not a ‘prediction’, they make one, and then call it their best estimate. Nice.
Two generations ahead, future extrapolation of current wealth growth rates yields almost a billion millionaires, equivalent to 20% of the total adult population. If this scenario unfolds, then billionaires will be commonplace, and there is likely to be a few trillionaires too – eleven according to our best estimate. [source]
So. What do I think about that annual report? Firstly, as far as annual reports go, I think it has a beautiful design. I used to look at the numbers first, now I look at the design.
Getting back on track, the trouble with traditional economics is that “shit happens”. If shit didn’t happen, dinosaurs would still be roaming this Earth. Even they weren’t so bold as to make predictions.
You know the thing about predictions? Predictions are unpredictable.
I think it’s more than a little naïve to think that the whole world is going to stand by and watch this gap widen indefinitely. Have wealthy people forgotten what caused the French revolution, or what? I am certainly not the only one who thinks that this might happen. I mean, history always repeats itself, does it not?
Wasn’t it Donald Trump who was too miserly to pay the asking price for a can of Pespi in a hotel fouyeur, and asked one of his own personal aides to go over the road and buy him a cheaper one? Sorry, but if that’s what being a billionaire is all about I do not aspire to that at all.
Sorry to say this, punks, but I too would rather see a revolution than to see who will become the next trillionaire.
And do you know what? You can be a part of that revolution, if you want. But it doesn’t have to be a bloody revolution. It can be a peaceful revolution. And you don’t need guns, you just need fingers.
That’s right I’m talking about a revolution in terms of where you do your shopping. I’m talking about a revolution in terms of who you do your shopping with. I’m talking about a revolution in terms of what you buy.
But first you need to look where your hard-earned money is really going. If you want there to be a fairer distribution of wealth, all you have to do is take a peek at the world’s rich list. See who’s on it. See what companies they own. And just don’t shop with them anymore. Choose an alternative, and in so doing, you will change the world.
There’s a reason that older people don’t like multinational corporations and this is it.
